Artist & tune

  • Vyris Edgehill - Blessings / Trilla Jenna - Focus
Overall rating : (1 to 5 stars)
This wicked double A-sided single features two great efforts across the awesome "Blessings" riddim, actually an updated version of Jackie Mittoo's wonderful "Jericho Rock" riddim which was originally done for Studio One. "Blessings" and "Focus" are successively performed by the late Vyris Edgehill and Trilla Jenna, both artists in their own right but also members of London's supergroup Sista - Women In Reggae, an acclaimed collective of female artists which was born in 2000. On the A side we're treated to the haunting roots piece "Blessings", the last song written and recorded by Vyris who untimely passed away in July of this year 2002. This single is a truly fitting tribute as it fully displays Vyris Edgehill's writing skills and intense vocal delivery. Furthermore the bass heavy production of the riddim, the inclusion of an appealing keyboard riff and then the wonderful backing vocals from the other Women In Reggae make up a great tune. On the flipside Trilla Jena delivers a vital matching cut as she seemingly effortless rides the "Blessings" riddim. Here the riddim incorporates a wicked trombone which adds a special flavor and thus works very well. It's Trilla Jenna's vibrant singjay style in combination with her constant strong and positive message that will certainly appeal to the fans of artists such as Sizzla, Jah Mason and Warrior King. Don't overlook this single because it's truly well worth purchasing if you're looking for good quality UK roots!
