Overall rating : (1 to 5 stars)
Dennis Smith a.k.a. Dennis Alcapone started his musical career in the late sixties when he started deejaing for the El Paso Hi Fi sound system. Dennis Alcapone soon became very popular and he actually was one of the few deejays capable of giving the then extremely popular U Roy any competition. In the first years of the seventies he recorded over a hundred tunes for such various producers as Keith Hudson, Duke Reid and Bunny Lee, and enjoyed notable success with his records. In 1973 he moved to the UK, where he also began production work, issueing music from himself, Dennis Brown, Delroy Wilson and Augustus Pablo. Now this reggae vet has released a very enjoyable new tune entitled "Charlene", produced, written and arranged by himself and issued on his own 'Housedoor Music' label. Across a revitalized version of the Wailers' "Hypocrites" riddim - laid by Sly & Robbie - Dennis Alcapone makes a real good and inspired impression as he performs in his well known smooth singing style of toasting with Mike Brooks supplying the appealing backing vocals. Dennis Alcapone not only delivers a positive tune, but also a fully satisfying effort!!
