Overall rating : (1 to 5 stars)
Levi Roots' 'SoundBox' label unleashes four solid to excellent pieces from some of the finest new roots artists around, delivered over a innovative and classic new riddim. In fact an unusual, but a truly superb rootsy riddim, which incorporates a superb Spanish style guitar picking by Jimmy Haynes and a heady Gipsy violin (played by ex-Soul II Soul member Johnny T). Every piece has its own merits, which makes it hard to point out the standout, especially as all efforts are above par. The core of each song is a chorus line of meaningful intent : "We won't let them fool us, we won't let them rule us...". Then each artist has created a further complimentary lyric of cultural diversity and meaningful intent. Luciano impresses with his first, stirring delivery on SoundBox. Levi Roots excels with an inspired and stellar performance. The 'Greedy Bug' is the kind of riddim that fits Anthony B's vocal style perfectly well, no wonder it has enabled this singjay to deliver one of his best tunes. And also General Pecos is seemingly inspired by the strength of the riddim as he comes with a surprisingly wicked tune. All the tunes are voiced and mixed in Jamaica at Mixing Lab by the Fat Eyes crew. Two further pieces from roots ambassador Mikey General ("Mind Of Matter") and poet of spoken word Jayzik Azikiwe ("Imagination") are available too.
