Overall rating : (1 to 5 stars)
A wicked brand new set of 7" singles from the "Manila Jeepney" label with five cuts for their fresh "Guide Us" riddim. The latter - the follow up to the "Dark Skin Girls" riddim - is laid by Russ D & The Disciples Band and produced by Raul Calaguas & Roots Hi-Tek. It was "Reggae Soldier" Tony Roots who delivered the very first tune over the riddim, then other artists followed to voice their piece. Tony Roots has an appealing melodious voice and he manages to showcase his vocal and lyrical skills well on "Guide Us", a solid effort worth of hearing. Mykal Rose (also spelled Michael Rose) needs no introduction to the reggae fan 'cause he has placed himself firmly on the reggae map, first as lead singer of reggae's supergroup Black Uhuru and then as a solo artist. Mykal Rose's cultural "Fly The Banner" is a truly outstanding roots tune delivered in the singer's well known style. A joy to hear this tune over and over again. On the flipside you'll find the spiritual "Father", a matching cut by J.D. Smoothe whose soulful vocal delivery is a real treat for the ear. New female singer Karen Vibes makes a good impression with "Me & My Man". She has a great voice and is definitely a name to watch in the near future. Chrisinti's "Sunburnt Faces" is one of the highlights on the riddim. Blessed with a distinctive voice Chrisinti delivers this excellent song in a smooth and confident manner that commands the listener's attention.
