|The sole purpose of this review of the 'Beach Front'-riddim by one of thé producers of
2009, closely working together with (it was 2009 then ... ) Vybz Kartel's Gaza Camp / Portmore Empire, Tarik
'Russian' Johnston for his own Head Concussion Music is to show what wonderful hip hop R&B influenced dancehall riddims have been laid in 2009 and what artists like Vybz Kartel to twist their lyrics into radio-suitable tunes.|
Of course 'Russian' scored more genuine hits with other artists as well in 2009, think of the monsterhit "Good Girl Gone Bad" by Tarrus Riley & Konshens, Konshens solo hit "This Means Money" and of course Kartel's "Life Sweet". So it should be no suprise that the other tunes by Andrew & Wada Blood, Hyah Slice and again Konshens (of whose tune even the ringtone was on pre-release available) are all truly strong as well (only Wrath Riley's "Mama" is a tad weaker).
But in the end the other tunes only serve as decoration for the master lyricist himself alongside the steaming hot sounding Indu. Definitely the clean "Beach Front Riddim" as well shows what a good year 2009 has been for 'Russian' besides the fact that you can't enter a dancehall without hearing the raw "Virginity" (though it's still funny to hear "Versatility" played back to back with it). What and impact this riddim and the tune had last year. Anyone for an EP-CD or extension to a full one- (or two- or three-) riddim album! Count me in!
