Overall rating : (1 to 5 stars)
From Finland comes the first release on the "Black Hula" imprint which was founded by Dj. Kova K in Tampere, Finland in the summer of 2003. The ideology behind the enterprise is to concentrate on raw but quality sounds inspired by Jamaican roots reggae and dancehall. Featured on this 7" single are two tunes by Puppa J & Tasottavat. Puppa J is a well established face in the small but active reggae scene of Finland. He's made his name since the mid-90's in the ranks of the pioneering roots outfit Laulurastas in which he played the keyboards and occasionally sang and toasted. Tasottavat is a roots/dancehall outfit based on the personnel of Laulurastas, the reggae legend of Jyväskylä. They create the riddims for Puppa J's songs, both live and in the studio. Until the release of his debut solo 7" single "Hourglass/Falla Me" Puppa J's energetic English language solo efforts have been limited to bristling live performances. "Hourglass" is a notable tune, underpinned by an awesome "old skool" roots reggae riddim with a nice dubbed up sound. The riddim track is well arranged and expertly laid by Tasottavat, while Puppa J's lyrical and vocal delivery makes a serious impression. The flipside contains the more dancehall oriented "Falla Me". It's a nice tune, but that's about all.
