Backing band and riddim makers Dub Akom from Marseille, France, and their own imprint Akom Records are one of the many branches of the French reggae tree, which has explosively grown since the beginning of the new millennium. It's obvious France (and also Germany) has taken over England's leading role when it comes to producing reggae in Europe. Bost & Bim (of Special Delivery Music), No More Babylon, Manjul, and Lyricson are only a few names that have achieved international recognition. Dub Akom consists of 4 musicians -- Faby (bass), David (drums), Lowrent (guitar) and Clodus (keyboard) -- who compose and play riddims that range from modern roots to dancehall and hip-hop. Their fresh original "Vitamin" riddim (only real instruments are used!) is a powerful rootical backdrop and a real joy to hear. The latter also goes for the vocal efforts of the four Jamaican artists who ride the riddim in fine style. Jah Mason and Lutan Fyah deliver a solid tune in their well-known singjay style, with Jah Mason's "Journey To Life" being the slightly better version on the riddim. Singer Natty King is in real fine form and makes a very good impression with "Sell Out". Edge Michael, nephew of the late Peter Tosh, is an artist not known to a wide audience, although he has been the lead singer of the Gumption Band, opening act and backing band for the celebrated Beres Hammond in the mid 1990s. Furthermore he has released several 7" singles since he made his recording debut in 1994 along with three full length albums "Hard Road To Travel", "Who Are They" and "Rebel With A Cause". His tune, "Mr. Babylon", shows he's an experienced singer with an appealing distinctive voice. Overall opinion is that these three 7" singles from Akom Records shouldn't be overlooked by any vinyl-buyer and Soundsystem selector.
