After Swiss roots reggae producers and Addis Record owners Jill and Stuff got a lot of critical acclaim and respect from the roots massive for the instrumental reggae album "Kingston Sessions" released under their Restless Mashaits moniker, they have been releasing a couple of 7" on roots riddims. First there was at the end of 2002 the 'More Redemption'-riddim voiced by Mark Wonder, Natural Black, Jennifer Barrett and Turbulence, in 2003 they produced the 'Frontline'-riddim featuring Admiral Tibett, Chezidek, Mark Wonder, Turbulence and Natural Black, and now the latest selection is the biggest so far. The 'King Of The Nile'-riddim has been voiced by Luciano, Junior Kelly, Luton Fyah, Jennifer Barrett and Natural Black for these 7"s, and there's another tune on the riddim that is featured on the upcoming "Pack Up And Leave" album by Guyana's singjay Ras Mac Bean of French Soundsystem Irie Ites. It's a great neo-roots riddim, that reminds me of the legendary Aswad 'Promised Land'-riddim. Recorded in Kingston's Steven Stanley / Cell Block studios and mixed by Fat Eyes' Colin 'Bulby' York, the riddim is driven by the famous Jamaican hornsmen Dean Fraser and David Madden. Luciano is in very fine form on "Strive" and once again it seems like Junior Kelly is holding his better tunes back for European producers, whether it's for Germany's Ingo Rheinbay's Pow Pow Productions on his 'Blaze'-riddim or Pionear's Germaican Records, or now Jill & Stuff's Addis label, because "Save My Soul" is a top notch tune. Luton Fyah has as well been voicing a lot of strong tunes (just think of his "Bits & Pieces" on the aforementioned 'Blaze'-riddim) for German producers lately, and proves he is keeping himself at that level with "Lose Themself". Jennifer Barrett gives us the female take on the riddim with "World Suffering", a strong tune, that is only hampered by the comparison to the other excellent selections on the riddim. Natural Black's "Strong Decision" is a very fine tune as well, but one extra star is deducted for him still not having found his own style of delivery. And to enjoy this selection to the max, turn one of the singles, and listen to the clean version of this wicked neo-roots riddim "King Of The Nile", to realize how great it is.
