The "Crystal Woman" riddim already made a good impression when two cuts - Nosliw's "Wie Weit" and Mono's "Soundbwoy Dead" - for this great live played rootsy backdrop appeared on the "Rootdown Allstars Volume 1" album, released in the summer of 2003. Thilo 'Teka' Jacks, label co-owner and producer of Germany's Rootdown Records, then took the riddim to Jamaica and returned with some brand new cuts, voiced by well known Anthony B, Jahmali and Richie Spice, hot new singjay Chuck Fender, and the much promising talents Elijah Prophet, Lutan Fyah and Rebellion. All five singles are worthwhile purchasing as they feature solid to excellent efforts. "Crystal Woman" is the kind of riddim that suits Anthony B perfectly well and it pays because "Player No More" is an excellent tune, delivered in the Original Fireman's inimitable style. Chuck Fender fully shows why he's one of the hottest and the most anticipated artists. His "Perfect Love" is a wicked message tune worth of hearing over and over again. He's backed by Elijah Prophet, whose"Got To Be Conscious" makes a serious impression. A fine roots singer with a style of his own, who has the potential to achieve wider recognition in the near future. Jahmali emerged in the nineties and attracted notable attention with his works for producers Bobby Digital and Donovan Germain. Unlike his contemporaries he isn't a high prolific artist, but when he records a tune the quality is there. Thus he seldom delivers a disappointing effort as can be witnessed once again and when listening to "On Our Guard". Half-French/half-German Maxim, who like many other German reggae artists has a hiphop background, delivers in nice tune sung in German language, but in the end fails to make a very strong impression. With Lutan Fyah's powerful "When Mi Rise It" we're treated to an above par tune, and also Rebellion's "Life Is" proves a notable effort. Richie Spice's "Gideon Soldier" is an outstanding piece showing that this artist is on his way to break big. "Wie Weit", performed by German singjay Nosliw, proves to be a convincing and superb conscious tune, although it might not appeal to those who don't understand the German language and thus don't have a clue with regards to what the lyrics are all about.
By putting out releases like these, it's only a matter of time before Rootdown Records will achieve international recognition.
