Steve Newland's debut EP is also the first release of a new French label called Black Eye, founded by the people behind the respected reissue label Makasound. Steve Newland, born in 1974 in Kingston, Jamaica, moved to the US in the nineties, where he decided to dedicate his heart and soul to making music. He then met talented composer, musician, producer and rap artist Black Mangoose, with whom he recorded three tracks in 2000. The style of these tracks, now featured on this EP, can be described as a mixture of Roots Reggae, Hip-Hop and Rock. The well produced "Reggae Soul", a tune with wicked basslines, instantly makes clear that Steve Newland is a vocalist with a distinctive raw vocal delivery, who has the potential to reach a wide audience. Next drops the almost twelve minutes lasting track "20 Centuries/Conflict", which showcases a variety of musical influences. The acoustic "Destiny Couldn't Wait" rounds off this EP in great style. Steve Newland has returned to Jamaica and is now a member of an upcoming group called Roots Underground, with whom he performed live at the Garnet Silk Festival in Mandeville, Jamaica, in 2003.
