Artist / Title : Ambelique - Soldier on the front line / Version
Label : Fat Eyes      Format : 7" (JA pre-release)      Date : 28-08-1998
Rating : (1 to 5 stars)

Lovers of classical style reggae should investigate this Fat Eyes single release. Veteran in the business Ambelique - he recorded back in the early seventies for Derrick Harriott as Ramon the Mexican, the deejay wild man, of "Don't-a count-a your-a chickens-a before they are hatched-a" notoriety - usually turns up on Sly & Robbie's "Taxi" label mainly covering soul tunes, but here his beautiful, mature voice - reminiscent at times of Jimmy Riley mixed with a dash of Beres Hammond - graces a brooding reality song of the first order sung over a slow rootsy one drop.
