Overall rating : (1 to 5 stars)
"Steamers A Bubble" is the latest effort from up-and-coming roots reggae singer Janine Cunningham aka Jah 9, whose recently released and very well received debut album "New Name" made her popular among European reggae fans.

"Steamers A Bubble" is a ganja ode delivered over the "Apartment" riddim, which was originally recorded in May 1982 by the Roots Radics band for producer Franklyn 'BenUp' Irving. The previously unreleased riddim has been dusted off and aptly renamed "Inna Di Yard" in order to introduce it to an entirely new generation. It pulls significance from the many groundings with legendary guitarist Earl "Chinna" Smith at his world renowned St. Andrew Park compound, brought to the reggae world via Makasound's music-documentary series called "Inna Di Yard".

The first time the "Inna Di Yard" riddim surfaced was in 2010, when the now defunct Makasound/Makafresh put out a 7" vinyl single that featured Paketo Wilson & Derajah's "Ina De Yaad". And now there's a second cut on the riddim from Jah9, who was one of the many musicians and artists that gathered in St. Andrew Park, where "Chinna" Smith took note of the singer's lyrical prowess. Jah9's 'jazz on dub' sensibilities could be experienced when listening to her "New Name" album and tunes such as "Tension" on the "Songbird" riddim and "Reverence" on the "Rootsman" riddim. Here these sensibilities are paired with the Roots Radics' easy rockers flow and it works very well, which makes that "Steamers A Bubble" bears an anthemic quality.

Big tune from an artist well worth checking out.
