Chris Jay - Zulu Man / Warrior Man
Label : Dubwise Productions Format : 10" Date : 01-12-2001
Rating : (1 to 5 stars)
Young lion Danny Vibes is a very talented roots singer from London whose main influence was Bob Marley, but also singers with a heartfelt voice like Dennis Brown, Luciano and Frankie Paul can be regarded as artists who have been really influencing him. However, Danny Vibes has developed a vocal style of his own as can be heard on three solid roots tunes he recorded for Dubwise Productions in 1999 (featured on their compilation set "Roots Connection"). Then other tunes reached the roots fans: "Now Is The Time" (Jah Warrior), "Want No Wickedness" (Jah Tubby's), "I Believe" and "Feel The Vibes" (both on Backyard Movements). With "Through The Valley" Danny Vibes delivers his next notable effort for Dubwise Productions. Chris Jay has built a great meditative roots riddim which features Dub Judah strumming and picking live guitar and Chas Bush Chemist keying in a live CS01 bass and blowing the mystical melodica. Produced and mixed by John Prento, who works as an engineer at Conscious Sounds studio with Dougie Wardrop and on material for his "Lightning & Thunder" label, the riddim works well and proves the perfect vehicle for Danny Vibes' vocal and lyrical delivery. "Dub Yard" is the matching instrumental cut, but it's the flipside of this 10" which deserves attention. From the moment the needle has reached the first groove one is treated to the awesome, truly hard hitting melodica led stepper, "Zulu Man", a killer built for sound system use. "Warrior Man" is the next version and is equally enjoyable to spin. Well worth purchasing if you're a fan of well produced UK roots.
