After the inclusion of German reggae-veteran Natty U's three latest riddims 'Weichei', 'Life Wire' and 'Feuer' on the www.reggae-zone.com ~ Riddim CD 01, he now released on his own Whackybaccy label 3 45s riding on the waves this compilation of clean new German riddims has caused. First there is a great take on the all time classic Studio One 'Throw Me Corn'-riddim, with the sweet vocals of Natty U and Ragga Fränkie in competition on "Sensi Ist Trumpf" with Der Biber's deejaying on this German-language ganja-anthem. Ragga Fränkie & Natty U as well as Der Biber were all contributors to the "Dancehallfieber 1"- compilation, and on this track they really lay down an excellent smokers-anthem for the (German) dancehalls. The flipside of this 7" is one of the riddims on the "Riddim CD 01" that made a huge impression on me: quoting from the aforementioned review: the 'Life Wire'-riddim has the potential to become a crowd favourite. Hard and fast conga-beats are accompanied by a guitar and keyboards making you think of "Stir It Up" all the time, and thinking of the riddim as a nice companion to Pow Pow's 'Shanty Town'-riddim. It's played by the Northside Rockers, the 7 piece riddimband of the Whackybaccy label, well experienced musicians who played alongside respectively in Sasha, Dick Brave (Sasha's rockabilly project), Lee Perry, Jack Radics, Curse and Cosmo Klein. The second 7" is as great, the Northside Rockers with a pumping dancehallbeat with rockguitar riff and oriental strikers theme backing former hiphop / reggae / ragga crew Koma Mobb member Ragga Ede (Einer Der Elite) Whiteman's "Weichei" 'Weakling'. Based on the in Germany famous "Dicke" melody and lyrics by comedian Marius Müller-Westernhagen, Ede sings Ich bin froh daß ich kein Weichei bin / denn (W)Ei(ch) sein ist 'ne Quälerei / Ich bin froh daß ich ein echter Rudeboy bin / denn das bedeutet frei zu sein meaning I'm glad that I'm no weakling / because being weak is a nagging / I'm glad to be a real rudeboy / because that means I'm free . Great riddim with a great adaptation of the cabaret lyrics. Last but not least there's the ragga remix of German's platinum album selling popstar Sasha's Blown Away, taken from the 2001 album "Surfin' On A Backbeat". With a high and smooth voice sometimes reminiscent of the sound of early Wham singles mixed with Maxi Priest's voice, MC Roughouse takes on the Shabba part adding spice and body with his deejaying to the lyrics. Where I would never have dreamt of listening voluntarily to a standard Sasha release, this song over its dancehall rock riddim is a great tune. And you can hear why as soon as you flip the 7" to hear the busy sounding entertaining riddim. Three very nice releases that can be ordered from producer Natty U's Whackybaccy label by mailorder (mail to gowhacky@whackybaccy.com)
