'John Brown's Body' is the brainchild of Kevin Kinsella (lead vocal, rhythm guitar, percussion) a youthful veteran of the American reggae scene. At the age of 15 he started a group called 'Tribulations' . After the release of two albums the band split up and Kevin decide to form a band with a more rootsy sound, with a less guitar drive/MTV oriented focus. Among Them is their first major label release.
The album opens with the magnificent title track Among Them, a tune filled with hope. It refers to the Book of Revelations. Their tune Play On is a similar song talking about works in music. The band takes their efforts "very, very seriously, having founded our own label and trying to promote goodly works". Kevin describes the blazing tune This Is Not The End as an anti-apocalypse message. The next tune is the accompanying dub cut This Is Drum & Bass. Music Is My Only Friend deals with the youth of lead vocalist Kevin Kinsella, when his family didn't understand fully why he wanted to work in music. Track 5 -Orange & Gold stands for the colors of the place whre he comes from, Ithaca, NY. In the song he praises the wonderful environment of the place, just as he does in another song of praise -Love is A Fire, a joyful uptempo tune. Other outstanding tracks on the album are the spiritual tunes Thank You Oh Lord and Singers And Players.
Their first major label release makes a solid impression, it's filled with exquisite music with a very strong authentic Jamaican feel, beautifully arranged songs and meaningful lyrics.
