The late great Dennis Brown was one of the most prolific and popular reggae artists ever. Born in 1956 he began his recording career with cutting tunes for producer Coxsone Dodd, while still in his childhood. In the 70s and early 80s he established himself as one of reggae major forces, releasing numerous excellent roots and lovers cuts for the Jamaican producers. In the nineties he wasn't at the forefront of reggae music, but he remained a name always worth watching out for. He passed away on July 1st, 1999. A complete generation of Jamaicanís and reggae fans literally grew up with his music. A devout Rastafarian and a member of the Twelve Tribes of Israel Organization, Dennis Brown was a musical genius and he will be dearly missed. No doubt Dennis Brown (also known as the Crown Prince of Reggae Music) was one of Jamaica's best sweet-voiced singers, who has never limited himself to one style. Lovers rock, roots & culture or dancehall music, he truly could handle it all. However, this Bunny Gemini produced album consists of mainly lovers tunes and two roots tunes, which happen to be our favorite tracks here : Wake Up And Live (across a remake of Glen Brown's "Youthman aka Wicked Can't Run Away" riddim) and Could It Be Me, performed over the classic "Love Me Forever" riddim. The album opens with a ballad called Giving Up On Love, a version of the famous soul classic. Next comes Bad Love Affair, a fine track across Studio One's "Swing Easy" riddim. Make Me Your Slave uses yet another Studio One riddim : "Sing Jah Stylee". The cover tune Any Day Now isn't exactly our liking, but with Stay In My Corner - featuring a backdrop reminiscent of Errol Dunkley's "A Little Way Different" - Dennis delivers a solid effort. The album closes with nice dub versions of Stay In My Corner and Bad Love Affair.
