Originally recorded in 1968 as "Poor Me Israelites" for Leslie Kong's Beverley's label, now the man who originally recorded the tune Desmond Dekker appears alongside the 'Don Raja' Apache Indian who stormed the charts in the early 90s with "Chokthere", "Arranged Marriage", "Movie Over India" and "Don Raja" from his "No Reservations" album, for a recut of this classic reggae tune. Both this single and the album "Time For Change" have been licensed from Apache Indian's own API Recordings by Austria's Dancehallfieber Records - who put themselves firmly on the reggae map with their "Dancehallfieber" compilations "01", "02", "03", and "04", for release about a month earlier than the UK and international releases. The "The Israelites - API & SUBS - 'The Block' Mix (Radio Edit)" is the straightforward version, mixed by Apache Indian himself and the builder of this riddim, his long time producer (and cousin!) Simon 'Subs' Duggal - who is one half of Bhangra/Desi duo Subs & Diamond, together with his brother DJ Swami a.k.a. Diamond. The real scorcher is the "MP - Bashment Mix" with its emphasis on a subsonic bass, more cut-up beats and Indian percussion all smoothly mixed by Mark Pearce. The "Paul Fire - Club Mix" could probably do very well on the dancefloors, but is too Eurodance-like for me with Desmond Dekker heavily vocodered over a 4/4 beat interspersed with jungle-like drumrolls, despite its added Indian riff and sped up ragga interjection halfway through the tune. Especially the "MP - Bashment Mix" is a very nice re-interpretation of this great song, and makes it worth buying this Maxi-CD, that also shows you with the nice "The Israelites - Video".
