Out of the blue comes this great collection of tunes from a very talented new artist who calls himself Nemo. But who is Nemo? He's the result of a childhood in Venice (Italy), then a move to Paris, ten years of music school in London and many trips and long journeys all around the world. In his first band at 16 and with a consummate passion for writing Nemo has become a true citizen of the earth. A first, a second and a third band.. then the harsh reality of French Underground. The will to exist forced him to go to Jamaica in 2000. There he worked with sound systems, appeared in stage shows and talent shows, and made dubplates in studios. In 2003 he recorded his first Jamaican single for producer Pelican of "Ball Of Fire" Records. Then, in February 2004, Jah Thomas heard him singing in the street purely by chance. The veteran producer was so taken that he asked Nemo to be the one to release the tune he was mumbling. He ended up recording a full length album under the watchful guidance of Jah Thomas. Even though Nemo's vocal delivery shows influences from artists such as Barrington Levy, Pinchers and Courtney Melody, he definitely performs in a style of his own, one that makes him stand apart. From beginning to end the listener is treated to emotional vocals with a strong sense of melody and harmony, backed by old skool dancehall riddims laid by the Roots Radics, Mafia & Fluxy (tr. 4, 5 & 9) and Sly & Robbie (tr. 12). This cd has many great tunes worthwhile of getting heavy rotation on the cd player, but in fairness we have to say that you'll also find a few mediocre tracks. Standout efforts are the strong message song "All Is In Your Eyes", "Blah, Blah, Blah", the lovers pieces "Melody For My Ladies", the herb tunes "Collie Meditation"" and "Highest Grade", the latter partly sung in French, and "Dancehall Jamboree" which revisits Jah Thomas's classic production of Tristan Palmer, "Entertainment".
Nemo's "Cross-Breed" is a well produced enjoyable album that fully shows the skills and talent of a much promising artist. Check it out because this one is strongly recommended!
