Midnite -- doubtless one of the most interesting modern roots reggae bands to emerge in the new millenium -- continues to stretch its musical boundaries on another collaboration set, this time recorded with the Mystic Vision crew, a roots reggae band based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Don't expect to hear straightforward roots reggae music when you insert this cd into your cd player, but be prepared that you are treated to a more laid-back musical vibe due to the predominantly ambient hip hop backdrops with its jazzy grooves and sometimes dubby effects. However what always remains the same is the beautiful poetry of the powerful lyrics written by Midnite's tremendous singer/songwriter Vaughn Benjamin, which are as strong as ever! The same goes for his striking vocal delivery which mesmerizes the listener throughout. While listening to the 15 tracks it's simply incredible to experience how much this artist has to say. Thus it's obvious that this collaboration with Mystic Vision is just another vehicle to get his message out to the people. Stand out tracks are "Ankoman", "Mornin", "Fors Ake", "Perilus", "Almighty" and "Word". This isn't exactly an album to start with when you want to check Midnite's music in order to hear why so many roots fans state that this band has set a new standard for modern roots. For that purpose one should listen to albums like for example "Ras Mek Peace", "Unpolished" and "Seek Knowledge Before Vengeance". More likely "Current" will appeal to those who have followed Midnite closely since they started to come to the attention of a wider audience.
