The Cool Ruler, Gregory Isaacs, born 1951, Kingston, Jamaica, has produced during a three decade career a trailer load of reggae classics. His effective combination of cultural songs and soul-wailing love songs was irresistable. He easily adapted the new digital style of the mid 80s, and his popularity further increased with consistent albums for King Jammy, King Tubby and Gussie Clarke. His impressive number of releases in the nineties included, almost inevitable, some really avarage quality albums. His latest one -Dapper Slapper- however is one of his better releases. The album is skilfully produced by reggae veteran and guitar player Errol 'Flabba ' Holt who managed to mix Gregory's voice effectively into the mix. Gregory's vocal delivery on this album reminds me of his early 80's productions.
Although he's a talented songwriter, Gregory often reverts to his earlier songs and reworks them in an updated style. He also delivers some new original tunes in his own unequalled lovers style. The backing is sober but very effective and the addition of a horns section (Dean Fraser, Headly bennett and Tony Green) makes the sound even more enjoyable. The album is recorded at Leggo's Recording Studios in Kingston, Jamaica.
A tasty album !
