It doesn't happen that often that a largely unknown new artist delivers such a stunning debut album as is the case with Mykal Somer's "Element Of Surprise". So, first of all let's introduce this very talented singjay/songwriter and producer. Mykal Somer (pronounced "Summa") was born Dwayne Somersall on the 9th of September 1976 in Half Way Tree, St. Kitts. As a youth, Mykal Somer was very determined and self motivated. He grew up with a strong cultural background enriched with reggae music, which became Mykal's only true love. His love for music started around the age of 14 years old. He began listening to the words of the late great Bob Marley, Lucky Dube and other cultural legends, which really inspired him. As a result Mykal decided to pursue his career as a musician and a messenger of The Most High. His singing career started at the age of 17, when he performed at a local High school in St. Kitts. At this time reggae music was at its peak in St. Kitts. After two years of performing locally and getting the support he wanted, Mykal decided to move to the U.S. to further his music career. And now, after several years of hardship and struggle Mykal Somer has released his debut album titled "Element of Surprise" through his own company Eskeh Entertainment Inc.
On his debut set Mykal Somer shows that he's an artist with a lyrical depth and emotive vocal prowess. He's one of those rare talents who is definitely going to take his place in the forefront of reggae music amongst contemporaries such as Sizzla, Junior Kelly, Ras Shiloh and Warrior King. From beginning to end this tenacious and uplifting modern roots reggae artist treats the listener to great conscious roots reggae. Mykal Somer's music reflects upon the struggles of man, the respect he has for women as well as the rewards that can be gained spiritually if one believes in a higher power. The tunes featured here have something for everyone as they deal with a variety of themes including culture, spiritual belief, love and reality. All of them are delivered over expertly laid entertaining original riddims, a real treat regarding the fact that most of the up-and-coming artists have to rely on refurnished classic riddims. "Element Of Surprise" is packed with great tracks delivered by an artist who can ride riddims with great ease, which makes it very hard to point out standouts. Thus we simply provide our musical choice cuts which include "Keep On Sharing", "Mama Miga", "Know Your Friends", "Journey" and the title track "Element Of Surprise".
With his first musical outing Mykal Somer has shown real good potential and if this set is a righteous taste of what's to come than he's definitely a name to watch. So remember the name Mykal Somer!
