Singer Maikal X is no newcomer in music business as he was a member of Holland's best selling hip-hop/reggae collective Postmen (named after the Burning Spear song "African Postmen"). Born Michael Parkinson, Maikal X lived all his life in the Netherlands. Having a Curacaolenian mother and Guyanese father made it impossible for him to loose the Caribbean feel for music. Maikal X started out as a break-dancer at the age of 6 and later discovered his singing abilities. From 1998 Maikal X, then known as Rolla Rocka / Shyrock, enjoyed critical and commercial success with the group Postmen. With this group he had a string of hit singles such as "Cocktail" and "You Wait" taken from their acclaimed debut album "Documents". After winning several awards (Silver Harp, Heineken Crossover award) and bringing out 3 albums, Maikal X left the group in 2004.

In the following years he became known as host of the Jamrock radio show and MC of Amsterdam's biggest dancehall and reggae party called "Jamrock". In 2008 Maikal X signed with the independent label Rock 'N Vibes, responsible for the success of Ziggi (Recado), currently one of the top reggae artists out of Europe. Maikal X dove into the studio with producer Mr. Rude, to record new material to pursue his solo career. Since then he has dropped a few hit singles like e.g. "Bear With Me", "The Best In You" and "The Warning". These are featured on his debut album "Genesis", along with the brand new single "Here She Comes" and ten other tracks including noteworthy combinations with reggae greats like Peetah Morgan of Morgan Heritage and Luciano.

The album kicks off with his first single, the solid lovers piece "The Best In You", which broke international barriers, ending up on one of the world's most popular reggae compilations, VP Records's "Strictly The Best Vol. 40". It's followed by the powerful conscious tune "We Know Why", for which he joined forces with Peetah Morgan. The mood changes with another lovers tune, "Lies", coming across an appealing cheerful riddim track with a very nice horns part. Matters of the heart are again the main theme of the nice albeit rather mediocre combination tune with Hawaiian songstress Irie Love. "Today Becomes Tomorrow" is a far better effort with more power in the backing, lyrics that keep you involved, and a solid vocal delivery (at a certain point reminiscent of Gentleman).

"Here She Comes" (a cover of the Hall & Oates pop hit "Maneater" from 1982) isn't exactly the kind of tune we instantly would pay attention to, however we have to admit that it is well done and it even might become a crossover hit. "Give Thanks" is more to our liking, although lyrically this combination with Luciano isn't as strong as the one with Peetah Morgan. The riddim that underpins "Darlin" would have been a perfect backdrop for a deep spiritual piece, but that's not the case as Maikal X chose to use it for creating a decent lovers piece. Next up is the result of the collaboration between Maikal X and Jamaican platinum producer Donovan "Don Corleon" Bennett, the hit tune "Bear With Me" on the "Changes" riddim. Amsterdam based Not Easy At All Productions provided the slow-paced bass driven "Collie Weed" riddim for the wicked "Born To Die", also used for Chezidek's single "Walk With Jah" from his "Judgement Time" album. Then comes the matching "Caught Up", which is followed by the lovers piece "Come Over", a very appealing tune with hit potential. The album closes with the solid "The Warning", in which Maikal X talks about the current situations around the world.

"Genesis" is a very well produced album with a broad appeal. Time will tell if this debut set is the start of an equally successful career in the reggae arena as was the case with his label mate Ziggi Recado.
