Ocho Rios-based Kariang Records - a roots-oriented label that does not avoid to cross cultural bounderies as they previously have expressed by producing the French reggae artist Pierpoljak - have released a noteworthy and most of all surprisingly intrigueing album from Ethiopian chantuese Chachi Tadesse, who has been singing Reggae in Amharic (the native tongue of many Ethiopians), and contemporary Ethiopian music for over a decade. Featuring guest performances by such conscious Jamaican artists as Sister Carol, Steven Marley, Sizzla, Prezident Brown and Kulcha Knox this album presents a unique and refreshing blending of two distant but - mainly through Rastafarianism and reggae music - united countries : Ethiopia and Jamaica. Assisted by Kirk Hedge, Kariang's resident engineer, David Rowe and Mikey 'Mao' Chung producer in charge Clive Hunt has done a solid job. Chachi's very distinctive and sometimes hypnotizing voice, the Amharic sung lyrics and the making use of "live" instruments, trademark of Kariang Productions, make "Hoya Hoye" not only an interesting album with atmosphere, but also one that caresses the eardrums. Do check it out if you're a true fan of conscious and spiritual music !
