After the emergence of Dutch reggae star Ziggi Recado in the first decade of the millennium, it took quite some time before a new generation of much promising homegrown talent emerged. And it's a good thing that some of these budding young artists show nuff potential to achieve an international breakthrough. In 2014 Rapha Pico (winner of the Benelux Reggae Contest 2014) drew attention with his - at Tuff Gong studios recorded - debut EP "Roots", which then was followed by a few noteworthy singles and collaborations. Last month Rass Motivated, finalist of the Benelux Reggae Contest 2013, came up with a strong sophomore album entitled "Mind Of A Rebel", followed hot on the heels by Junior Kenna's six track debut EP "Here I Come".

At a very young age Junior Kenna, a Dutch reggae/dancehall artist of Surinam/Indonesian descent, was inspired to join in this genre by his father (Kendread), mother, uncles and brothers. Initially he began as a rapper, but soon he preferred reggae. Growing up he developed his vocal skills, and his talent for writing lyrics is remarkable. 2014 was the year that Junior Kenna acquired more prominence in the reggae scene with performances at several Dutch festivals and as support act for Gyptian. Besides that he didn't go unnoticed as finalist in that year's Benelux Reggae Contest. His talent and passion were also recognized by other artists such as Kalibwoy, Rass Motivated, Maikal X, Rapha Pico and Mr. Patze, wich led to several collaborations. In 2016 Kenna linked up with producer Patrick "Mr. Patze" Esajas of production label Area 026 Music to work on his debut EP, aptly titled “Here I Come”.

The EP opens with a real nice lovers piece called "Follow You", delivered over an infectious riddim, which sounds very familiar to our ears. And indeed, it's the same riddim from the Feueralarm Band that was used for Benaíssa's "I Believe" (featured on the 2008 album "Tables Turn"). Next comes the title track "Here I Come", a collaboration with to us unknown Hussla D. This combination tune is pretty good with both artists making a very nice pairing on this effort full of conscious vibes. And then there's "Ganja Addict", released as a kind of 'warm up' single prior to the release of this EP. A reggae album is rarely released without at least one ganja tune, and this EP features even two of them! And although the solid "Ganja Addict" at first hear makes the best impression, it's "High Grade" with its somewhat odd sounding, but cleverly built 'clapping' riddim that in the end turns out to be more interesting. Vibes are high on the awesome "Tired n Vex", while Junior Kenna and Rapha Pico make a very fine duo on a beautiful song for the ladies, the lovers rock tune "For Me".

A thoroughly entertaining debut EP from a very promising young artist from the Netherlands. Do check it!!
