The Texas based reggae band Root 1 really surprised us with their debut set "Nomad's Land" in 1997. This was a near perfect set, mixing R&B, jazz and afro-riddims including the jungle track "Jungle Ed".

The current Root 1 lineup features the vocal harmonies of three long time internationally respected reggae musicians. Jerry Stevens is founder, lead singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer of three successful Root 1 albums after years of performing with other nationally well known bands Pressure and the Killer Bees. Michael Wong is lead singer-songwriter, drummer, and producer of 15 years of highly exposed and popular live shows and studio recordings of the Trinidad Panmasters and World Tribe. Iven (Bassie) Liburd is lead singer-songwriter, bassist, and producer of 17 years of live shows for many famous West Indian and American reggae acts such as Ellis Hortence, Prince Mohammed, Screw Driver, and One Destiny. Root1 also features Deborah Huff (vocals, guitar, violin and percussion) who performed as lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for various blues and rock and roll acts throughout New England and Austin. Root 1 was voted #1 world music group in the Austin Jazz Players and Critics poll, and #2 in the Austin Chronicle poll. For the past 12 years they have been touring their unique mix of Caribbean crossover dance music throughout the U.S. and Mexico.
Led by Jerry Stevens the band now puts out its latest release called "Love Dub And Guitars". The mood has changed, we notice jazz influenced elements and some Latin flavors. The tempo has gone down and that change is definitely not our cup of tea, but on the other hand the musicians involved here are top artists, delivering quality music.
We suggest you judge for yourself if you like to know how the band has developed through the years.
