Ras Michael Junior's "Medicine Man" -- the sixth installment in the "Inna De Yard" series -- follows up the excellent Viceroys set, probably the strongest release in the series so far. Those already familiar with the "Inna De Yard" concept know what to expect, namely strictly acoustic music recorded in Earl "Chinna" Smith's yard.

Featured vocalist on this brand new set is the lesser known Ras Michael Junior (son of reggae legend Michael George Henry aka Ras Michael), accompanied by his Jah Is My Light Band and musicians such as Earl "Chinna" Smith, Winston McAnuff, Keith Alstead, Ronnie Davis, Cleveland Steel and Ozune.

Even though these are Jamaican recordings and the Nyabinghi drumming as well as references to the Rasta culture are obvious, Ras Michael Junior predominantly presents himself as a singer/songwriter in the tradition of the American folk blues. It's with tracks like for example the beautiful "White Line", the striking "Medicine Man", "Good News", "Make More Money", and the moving "Old Man", that names like Bob Dylan, Richie Havens and Ben Harper come to mind. Not a bad comparison we would say.

Ras Michael Junior has a powerful vocal delivery and also lyrically spoken he has the ability to easily draw the listener's attention. This, and the intimacy of the acoustic recordings with sometimes captivating musical contributions (in particular from Earl "Chinna" Smith), makes "Medicine Man" an album worth checking out, even though it undeniable has its flaws and certainly can't be qualified as a real reggae album.

The DVD bonus, which has real good sound & vision quality, contains video recordings of "Spiritual Order", Good News", "Make More Money", "White Line", "In Jah Garden" (not included on the cd) and "Voice Unto Jah".
