As the former lead singer and the foremost creative force of the Grammy-winning Black Uhuru, Michael Rose conquered the world with songs like "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner," "Sinsemilla," "Shine Eye Girl," and many others. As a solo artist, he is touring the world and releasing many strong albums on Heartbeat. His current set, 'Never Give It Up' is his eighth for the HeartBeat label and is produced by Michael himself. Studio wizards Karl Pitterson and Dr. Paul (from the Chaingang music label) provide the perfect musical thunder : Karl Pitterson, music on "Chant Higher," "Big Ting," "Grandma," "Strike It Hard," "It's A Party" and "Storm Is Coming". Doctor Paul, music on "Never Give It Up," "Jailhouse Call," "People Are Bawling," "Small World," "Better To Be Safe" and "Musical Rate". The background vocals are provided by Ryan Bailey, Michele Gordon, Arimenta Jackson, Jerry Blaive. |
Since his glory days with Black Uhuru he's known and loved for the fact that he always delivers his songs with a burning intensity. It brought him many faithful fans throughout the world, fans who won't get disappointed when spending their money on this album. Crisp production, danceable riddims and crossover potential are the keywords when it comes to talking about "Never Give It Up". Listening to the album you may hear lots of 'latin' influences, in particular in songs like Never Give It Up, People Dem Bawling and It's A 'Party. The ballads Strike It Hard and Chant It Higher are praiseworthy efforts, but they are not the kind of tunes Michael Rose fans are waiting for. They should check out more suitable songs such as Draw The Weed, Storm Is Coming, Jailhouse Call and Musical Rate.
All in all "Never Give It Up" is a solid Michael Rose album.
