Due to Winston McAnuff's strong association with the Makasound crew, which he first met in 1999, he has been involved in most of the releases the young but by now well respected label has put out in the five years of their existence. There are, of course, Winston McAnuff's own releases including "What A Man A Deal With", "Diary Of The Silent Years", and his contempary album "A Drop" with The Bazbaz Orchestra, but he also participates in the "Inna De Yard" series and has linked Makasound to other Jamaican artists/producers which led to the release of some notable vintage albums. Now fans of the Electric Dread as well as those wo are always looking for good vintage reggae are finally able to purchase the singer's first full length album in digital clarity. "Pick Hits To Click" is produced by singer/producer Derrick Harriott and features recordings made at Channel One and Joe Gibbs studios in Kingston, Jamaica, between 1975-77. Between the nice album opener "Punky Rock 1" and its wicked dub version "Punky Rock 2", which closes off this very enjoyable set, we're treated to two already known tracks. The latter include the wonderful "Ugly Days", previously presented on the first volume of the "A Place Called Jamaica" compilation, and the excellent "Head Corner Stone", which is featured on Winston McAnuff's "Diary Of The Silent Years". This album has enough tunes truly worth of hearing over and over again, including the sublime "Kushy I" with its awesome bass driven Rockers style riddim track, the vibrant "Whosever Believeth" and "Time Is Running Out", in which Winston McAnuff urges to keep the faith and to continue to believe in spite of what others say. But also roots classics like "Irie Lion" and "Garvey's Vision" are solid pieces and a joy to listen to. "My Pick To Click" is a very nice medley of four songs made popular by Toots & The Maytals, Justin Hinds & The Dominoes and Count Prince Miller, the songs being "It's You", "Boderation Oh", My New Name" and "Mule Train". Another worthy reissue from the Makasound label, which also includes a very nice booklet featuring pics, a short bio, the original text from the original LP, and the lyrics of the songs. Ignore at your peril!
