Born and raised in the heart of reggae, Kingston 13, Jamaica, Junior Kelly - younger brother of the late Jim Kelly from Killamanjaro Sound - delivers music for the conscious, uplifting, cleanliness of the heart, anti-violence, respecting the rights of people, places and things, and crucially, sharing love. In 1998 Junior Kelly first came to our notice when FP Records released his fine 7" single "Good Tiding". At the end of September 1999 UK based Jet Star Records released a 3 track CD single, which made this tall, dreadlocked singjay's debut album highly anticipated.
Although Junior Kelly's vocal style is reminiscent of Sizzla, he does not clone the latter. The material on "Rise" showcases an artist who has managed to develop a vocal and lyrical style of his own. One who is capable of delivering an emotional and heartfelt collection of excellent conscious songs, dealing with reality and lovers themes. All this makes Junior Kelly not only an appealing artist, but also one out of many unique Jamaican talents, like for example Anthony B and Everton Blender before him, who are able to make a serious impression with their very first album delivery.
This album contains many great tunes, but the most outstanding tracks are the awesome "Purified", "I'll Never", the title track "Rise", "Let It Grow" and "Can't Get Away". With his first full length album Junior Kelly truly proves he's an upcoming artist of great potential, who definitely has the skills and abilities to provide the modern roots reggae fan captivating songs, melodies and musical message !
