Ziggi Recado’s new release is titled "Ivan The Terrible". Referring to himself (his full name is Ricardo Ivan Blijden) and of course to the Tsar who reigned Russia in the 16th century.
The singer has been experimenting in music from a young age. As the hobby grew more inspiring he after a while signed his first record deal in 2004. That resulted in his debut album release in 2006, "So Much Reasons". It can be considered as his formative years, but with this release and successful tracks like "Blaze It" he made a name for himself and got a lot of attention in the Netherlands, but also in large parts of Europe and the Caribean.
His sophomore album "In Transit" was released on Greensleeves. It was of high standards, included collaborations with high profile artists and it cemented his name in the international reggae scene. The EP "Same Difference" and self-titled album "Ziggi Recado" followed, with this name change he also made sure there was no longer room for a name confusion with Ziggy Marley. Change of management was another radical change in his career. He continued to start more independent projects, gaining him more control and supervision over his own music.
This new wave resulted in the six track scorcher "Liberation" followed by "Liberation 2.0". Both top notch albums with a pure and mainly roots sounding. His last full length album was "Therapeutic", that was released in 2014. It was produced by Zion High and can be considered as his most prolific and consistent release to date.
The strength of his albums and great stage appearances make him a well-seen artist on tours and festivals around the globe. "Ivan The Terrible" is produced by Khari Capone, being longtime bandmember Rekesh Dukaloo and Ziggi Recado himself. It starts with "Blessed", the first single of the EP. A tune with a slight pounding beat, the contemporary sound is remarkable, making it a surprising but above all very good opener. The vocalist's confident lyrics make it a strong beginner and it explores what direction this new release is heading for.
Real trademark Ziggi Recado material is "Turn Me On", a romantic tune. He is as always assured to find a good mixture between cultural and lovers topics. Up to di time material is "A Level" another display the new approach he has chosen for this release. Also a solid effort is "Upstoppable", tight production and Ziggi switching smoothly between different vocal styles.
My personal favorite of this release is "The Wickedest Thing". A hardcore tune, well up-tempo, self-assured lyrics and creatively mixed in the studio. No weak moments on this album, just A-class music, as it is for the EP's last tune "On It", the next love track. Sure to make you move while listening and making it an album appealing to a wide audience.
Ziggi Recado is not an artist who releases extensively, but it is a fact his singles and albums are always extremely entertaining. His music is the kind filled with a message and he makes sure that he is in full control of his work. His previous releases were mainly classic dancehall or reggae efforts, this albums shows the natural progression he's been going through and proves he is well equipt to remain a force in the future.
"Ivan The Terrible" is a very strong release with a crisp and contemporary sound and feeling.
