This compilation set focuses on the most populist of all forms of Jamaican music : Ragga. Ragga is a form of dancehall music which is mostly played with digital instrumentation and ranges from rougher-than-rough deejay music, through romantic crooning, on to a new generation of cultural artists. The term "Essential" in the title of this CD may be too exuberant as this set only collects tunes which were mainly produced by Bobby "Digital" Dixon - the producer who played a key part in the establishment of Shabba Ranks and the late Garnett Silk - while other producers who played a major role during that specific period are left out. But nevertheless "Essential Dancehall Reggae" is a fine and entertaining compilation deserving of a place on your CD shelf.
