With the fourth volume in the Hi-Grade Ganja Anthems series, Greensleeves manages to deliver yet another flawless collection of 'weed tunes'. These songs are some of the best loved hits from the reggae because so many people all over the world love smoking marijuana.
The album starts in boombastic style with the combination Collie Buddz and rasta-turned hip hop star Snoop Lion, who tackle and reconstruct Michael Palmer's 1983 smash hit 'Don't Smoke The Seed' and the result is an awesome 2014 Ganja Anthem. The whimsical Makeida Beckford better known as Keida emerged as a budding new talent on the dancehall/reggae scene in 2009. Ganja Tea is a top notch self written reggae tune produced by Rory Stone Love. Kevin Mark Holness aka Mighty Mystic, is a Jamaican born, Boston, Massachusetts-based reggae artist. He is the younger brother to former Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness. His song Cali Green is a full flavored ganja tune.
After these contemporary sounds it's time for some vintage stuff. Linval Thompson follows with the classic I Love Marijuana, and Desi Roots brings you Weed Fields, originally issued in Jamaica on the Plantation label and in the UK on Hawkeye discomix around 1980. The song was a smoker's interpretation of the clean cut Brothers Four song 'Green Fields'. Pablo Moses' I Man A Grass Hopper needs no introduction. The late great Sugar Minott recorded so many fantastic ganja tunes, but Oh Mr. DC was one of his best smokers tunes. It was a reworking of the Tennors' 1967 'Pressure & Slide' Studio One riddim. In 2006 he re-recorded his anthem in combination with Fantan Mojah and Military man in a production by by Andrew Prendergast & Josef Bogdanovich a.k.a. Black & White of Downsound Records.
Italian reggae superstar Alborosie teams up with Camilla for a nice reworking of Rita Marley's One Draw. More combination niceness here as Jamelody performs High Grade featuring excellent toasting from Natural Black, a tune produced by Bobby Digital. Busy Signal does his smokers story Hi Grade across the 'Stalag' riddim for producer Shane Brown. New York deejay Shinehead brings us one of the sweetest and relaxed ganja anthems ever: Collie Weed, an adaption of the Seals & Crofts pop hit 'Summer Breeze'. The album finishes in vintage style with strong tunes by Horace Ferguson with his digital ganja tune Sensi Addict, Horace Andy's well known 70's tune Better Collie across Striker Lee's 'Gorgon' riddim and two Junjo Lawes productions by deejay Welton Irie and Mystic Eyes.
Awesome Hi-Grade package!
