Instrumental releases have always been very popular among the Jamaican record buying public. Especially in the sixties and early seventies - a time when the sounds of ska, rocksteady and early reggae played a dominating role in Jamaican music - non-vocal records were in demand. "Trojan Instrumentals Box Set" is a fine three-cd sampler that collects the work of some of the great virtuosos and instrumental groups from this hugely creative and productive period, which still inspires producers and musicians today regarding the many reworked riddims that find their origin in the aforementioned period.|
Influential musicians like Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso, Don Drummond (all three founder members of the original Skatalites) and Augustus Pablo are represented with some noteworthy contributions. But also saxofonist Val Bennett, bassist Boris Gardiner, organist Lloyd Charmers and trumpeter Johnny "Dizzy" Moore deliver some of their finest efforts. When it comes to instrumental groups it is sometimes hard to find out "who's who" as the line-up of these outfits not only could change from time to time, but also got different names depending on the producer they worked with. Take for example the Dynamites (the core consisting of Gladdy Anderson, Hux Brown, Jackie Jackson, Winston Grennon, Neville Hinds and Wallace Wilson) who were respectively credited as Beverley's All Stars (Leslie Kong), Harry J. All Stars (Harry Johnson), G.G. All Stars ( Alvin Ranglin) and The Upsetters (Lee Perry). It becomes even more confusing when we draw in the Hippy Boys (with brothers Aston Familyman Barrett and Carlton Barrett), who also had issued their material as The Upsetters.
However, these are details... so let us stick to the most important thing which is their excellent musicianship as can be witnessed by listening to this very enjoyable set of instrumentals !
