The 'Jah Soldier' riddim hit the streets some 5 years back after rotating in heavy style on the notoriously demanding Berlin roots underground scene. It was built by Aldubb and Jah Seal aka Ronan Lynch who is a writer, historian, musician, singer and occasional selector from Dublin, Ireland. He currently lives in Berlin, where he works with Irieland Soundsystem and Planet Earth Studio in Kreuzberg. He has released two albums ("Spirit Live" and "Itopia") along with several singles on 7" and 10" on One Drop Music (Berlin). His regular collaborators include producer Aldubb and Irieland selector Mr Glue.
He also works as a writer and editor. He has worked as an investigative journalist for newspapers in Ireland and the USA and has published two books on Irish history and politics. He has a Ph.D in history from the National University of Ireland. Furthermore he is also the editor and publisher of the reggae music magazine Irie Up. He has recently started production of a series of exhibitions about reggae and soundsystem culture. Aldubb is the resident sound engineer at Planet Earth Studios Berlin, where he records, mixes and produces all his music. The most in-demand dub re-mixer in Germany has developed his own trademark sounds, using a combination of classic vintage equipment and the latest in 21st century digital studio technology.
'Jah Soldier' is an awesome synth driven mid tempo steppers riddim, tantalizing, hypnotizing and connecting the European and Jamaican soundsystem culture in fine fashion. The 12 track collection starts with the original Jah Seal Jah Soldier track. Jah Seal delivers some five more versions of the riddim. We really liked the Extended 10" Version of Jah Soldier, an almost 10 minutes long pleasure ride across the riddim! Mighty Howard's version Jah Soldiers is a wicked roots track. He's an Afro-American artist who grew up in New York. He travelled a lot in Europe and finally teamed up with Aldubb for some fine productions. One of the best versions =Good To Be Loved comes from Nkululeko Madolo aka Black Dillinger. He hails from South Africa and already has three albums to his name: "Live And Learn", "Love Life" and "Better Tomorrow". The unknown Nestori makes a decent impression with Safe & Sound Ina Berlin. Horns fan should check out Hornsman Coyote's Trombone Version, we really thought it was a track by Matic Horns, excellent instrumental! Diana Levi represents the female touch here. Unknown to us, it seems she's a Polish singer, we would like to hear some more from her as The Story is an above average roots tune.
Check out this Berlin roots gem!
