The album 'Soca Baptism' is compiled by Christafari aka Mark Mohr for his Christian Reggae Dancehall label 'Lion of Zion'. The label specializes in releasing contemporary reggae and dancehall albums, bringing a unique brand of gospel reggae to nearly every state and some twenty countries around the world. |
He takes you on an enjoyable trip to a separate set of islands in the southeast Caribbean--Trinidad & Tobago--for an introduction to soca. Renowned for its magnificent carnivals, calypso, and this century's only musical invention, the steel pan, Trinidad & Tobago has already shared its sounds with the world through secular soca songs like Arrow's "Hot, Hot, Hot." If reggae music is the heartbeat of the Caribbean, then soca is the pulse. Created by the late Ras Shorty I in 1973, "Soca" is short for the "soul of calypso." It is a unique hybrid of Caribbean instrumentation and bangra/chutney beats, bridging the two major ethnic groups of Trinidad and Tobago--the African and the East Indian. Layered over the driving kick drum and bubbling bass lines are syncopated up-tempo chutney beats accentuated by militant snare stabs. The album is phat packed with seventeen tracks of powerful music for the mind, body, soul, and spirit.
Featured here also are some tunes by Sherwin Gardner who has just released his album 'Leaning' on the Lion of Zion imprint. Outstanding tunes are Fire Fall by Temple Yard, Jah Pickney with Trinity Divinity, Christafari's Straight And Narrow and the opening tune Shield And Banner by Lion's Pride.
